The earth is brimming with tons of plastic, and its pollution has been a major environmental issue for the last decade. From land to sea, no place is unscathed from the plastic crisis. Every year a copious amount of plastic – almost 8 to 10 million tons – is discarded into the oceans, severely impacting the ecosystem and marine life.
According to research, plastic is expected to outweigh the total number of fish by 2030. It is truly a tragedy for the oceans; hence, it is crucial to mitigate this problem before it’s too late. Carla Virgos, the founder of the travel company Kandu, strongly advocates for a plastic-free environment and is taking necessary measures to make her ocean safari expedition services eco-friendly.
About half a year ago, Carla founded Kandu with the help of a few Maldivians, including ocean expert Nazykko, with a vision to revamp people’s beliefs about oceans and sea life. Today, Kandu is a gateway to connect with the deep blue and the sublime beauty that lives underwater.
Besides imparting education to society, Carla also wanted to implement eco-friendly initiatives that would benefit the land and the sea as she noticed an abundance of single-use plastic in the Maldives. Kandu strives to be safe for everyone involved, including the oceans; hence, steer clear of using single-use plastics.
To ensure plastic-free week-long trips, Carla provides water flasks to everyone, from guests to the crew. The lunch boxes and cutlery used are made of wheat straw fibers and recycled plastic, and no plastic straws are used as well. In addition, Carla makes sure to keep the boats’ speed low around animals and limit noise pollution in the ocean.
Carla believes in playing one’s own part in the betterment of society. We may think our small contribution doesn’t bring any significant change but little by little, a little becomes a lot. Everyone is responsible for mitigating plastic pollution as much as possible and saving marine species from ingesting or entangling in plastic debris, which causes grave harm to their lives.
Without sharks, dolphins, whales, corals, etc., the boundless sea loses its might. Therefore, we must do everything we can to make the oceans a safer habitat for them. If you dive and snorkel with Kandu by Carla Virgos, rest assured that it is marine-friendly as well as informative, making it one of the best experiences of your life.
