Over the last few decades, there has been unprecedented progress in important aspects of the lives of girls and women. Still even where gender gaps are narrowed, systematic differences in outcomes often persist, including women’s lack of voice and empowerment. However, it is necessary that the world realizes, in its true sense, the need of removing such constraints and unleashing women’s full productive potential to make societies more resilient and more prosperous.
Meanwhile, the good news is that things are changing now. In recent years, we have seen some mindset shift, with society progressively becoming accustomed to the fact that women are equally as competent as men. With the passing of time, women are standing up, challenging the long-held belief of the supremacy of men and empowering each other to defy the odds of inequality. With the world becoming more welcoming of this change, Melissa Falconer is instilling within the audience, especially women, the boldness and empowerment to believe in themselves through her distinctive artwork.
Hailing from Toronto, Canada, M. Falconer is a prolific artist with an impressive portfolio to her name. She is known for her distinctive approach to art where she makes every art piece meaningful. The esteemed artist puts her heart and soul every time she picks up a brush to paint and it shows in each of her masterpieces. From being a childhood passion to becoming a career choice, art has had a huge role in transforming Melissa’s outlook on life.
As surprising as it may sound, art has the power to empower, let others feel confident, and follow their dreams and passions. Melissa realized this once she started investing in arts as a means to escape from the depression she fell prey to during her Economics degree. Later, she got into arts full-time and started her art business as a pursuit to follow her deep-rooted childhood passion.
Her passion soon turned into a mission of helping others when she received stories from them of how they felt trapped in their lives. Melissa knew, very well, the feeling of not being able to pursue her dreams. As a Black woman, Melissa herself had to let go of her art passion to pursue a “so-called” better career like becoming an accountant. But willpower and self-belief changed the course of her life, letting her chase her dreams far and wide.
Knowing the feeling all too well, she set out to inspire and empower others to pursue their passions regardless of societal obstacles that they may face. “As a Black woman who has seen and witnessed how societal obstacles have affected people of color, I feel like it is my duty to inspire women to greater heights,” says the profound artist whose portfolio contains portraits of powerful people of color, including Rihanna, The Obamas, Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji, Kobe Bryant, etc., among other inspirational art.
Melissa’s art contains all elements that a masterpiece ought to have; the beauty, the power of attraction, the feeling of empowerment, the meaning, and the relationship between the art and her culture, the Black culture. All things are beautifully executed to create art that is unique and enthralling.
