Music Coach Sean Wilson Strives to See More Piano Ear Training at Schools & Colleges

Many music lovers are getting their fill of live music on TV these days. It’s always a treat to watch world-renowned pianists perform. But some of the most acclaimed performers of our day never even had the chance to learn piano ear training in school; as a result, they lack true passion and love for the music. To encourage and guide people on the importance of ear training, renowned music coach Sean Wilson talks about how musicians can improve their rhythm and strengthen their skills with ear training.

Growing up in a family of musicians, his parents taught Sean to play complex musical instruments. His parents have always been passionate about music; seeing this, he created an appreciation, knowledge, and discipline for music. During his college days, he never had a chance to pursue formal music training, but practicing music every day at school, churches, and college events trained him in various ways to listen to songs by ear and play them without sheet music.

Sean, unable to gain proper music training, states that reading music and learning theory can be important. But learning by ear is arguably more important. In fact, ear training is so crucial that all music students should learn it in school. These basic foundations of music help individuals to identify chords, rhythm, pitches, intervals, and other essential elements of music solely by hearing. Enhancing your aural skills and exercising different ear training techniques, such as building pitch sensitivity and incorporating composition with diligent practice, will increase your performance and musical ability.

Sean strives to see more piano ear training at schools and colleges. He adds that many music schools and colleges don’t teach ear training in their piano classes. And there is a growing trend toward eliminating music in schools. Furthermore, existing music training programs in schools severely lack the training that focuses on playing what you hear; instead, they are more focused on teaching students to read or write music. As a result, this purely mechanical music approach has discouraged many students from pursuing music as their profession.

Further, Sean states that many music educators today are quick to point out that ear training is challenging. They’re right. It can be hard to teach something so hard to quantify. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t vital. In fact, ear training is the most important skill a musician can have that deepens the love and passion for learning music.

Most importantly, Sean advises the musical education system to incorporate ear training sessions at schools and colleges. Hearing just the music can be very tiring, but as we learn to notate and understand music on a deeper level and practice it daily, this joyless chore can become less challenging. Ear training is a complicated process, but once you have mastered this area, you can reach the height of the music industry in the future.

With his 47k followers on Instagram, Sean teaches educational content to his followers. There, he explains how to play dope chords, melody rules, and different approaches to playing piano. You can also discover the talent of learning music by ear at a very young age by joining Sean Wilson’s online piano lesson website or by visiting his YouTube channel for the latest on chords and theory. The best thing is that he diligently uploads a video every Thursday at 4: 30 p.m!
